The course structure in an existing course can be expanded to include new chapters (learning objectives) and subchapters (Sharable Content Objects) as well. This article explains how to proceed.

Adding a learning objective

A learning objective is always added to a course along with the associated Sharable Content Objects (SCOs).

  1. Find your course in the course library and open the Settings.
  2. On the left-hand side, you can see the chapter structure listing the learning objectives already included. Does the additional learning objective already exist? If so, continue with step 6.
If the learning objective doesn’t exist yet, you’ll need to create it first. To do so, switch to the learning objective directory by clicking on one of your already used chapters in the chapter structure on the left.

Adding a new learning objective

  1. In the overview on the left-hand side, navigate to the folder where the existing learning objectives are stored. On the right-hand side, open a popup by clicking the New Learning Objective button, where you can enter the desired title for the learning objective and, if desired, a short description. The description is optional and will appear in the course’s chapter overview for learners. Confirm your changes by clicking Save.

  2. To link a SCO to the learning objective, click on the Assign button on the right in the Sharable Content Objects section. Learning objectives are displayed in the course as soon as at least one SCO is assigned to them. In the popup, select an existing SCO using Assign or create a new module using Create New Sharable Content Object.
  3. To return to the Settings, choose an existing learning objective and click on the course title.

Add an existing learning objective

  1. Use the Add Learning Objective button below the chapter structure on the left side to access the list of learning objectives. In the popup, check the box for the learning objective you just created or an existing one, and confirm your selection by clicking Apply.
  2. In the course settings, you can adjust the order of learning objectives in the chapter structure on the left if needed: Drag the learning objectives to the correct position using the double-dotted line. Save and Update the settings to apply the changes to the course.

Add a new SCO

SCOs can also be added later on to an existing learning objective.

  1. Find your course in the course library and open the Settings.
  2. On the left-hand side, you’ll see the chapter structure with the learning objectives already included. Click on the learning objective to which you want to add a SCO. This will take you to the corresponding section in the learning objective directory.
  3. Use the Assign button in the Sharable Content Objects section to add a SCO to the learning objective: In the popup, select an existing SCO using Assign or create a new one using Create New Sharable Content Object. If needed, you can change the order of the SCOs within the learning objective and rearrange them by dragging using the double-dotted line.
  4. Go to the course settings and apply your changes to the course by clicking Save and Update.
